The Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER) was founded in 1968 and currently is under the administration of Atomic Energy Council (AEC), Executive Yuan.

Located in scenic Longtan, Taoyuan, INER occupies about 50 hectares in the close neighborhood of the Shihmen Reservoir. INER is the sole national research institute, established with the mission, to promote peaceful applications of nuclear science in Taiwan. INER has 40 years experience on research and applications in the field of atomic energy.

We have accumulated needed technologies on the areas of maintenance of safety operations of nuclear power plants, protection of radiation safety, process/deposition of radioactive wastes, application of plasma technologies, as well as development and applications of nuclear medicines. Hence, we have made contributions on the aspects concerning the safety maintenance of domestic nuclear power plants, the uses of nuclear medicines in major hospitals, and even the applications of radiation to a variety of related civilian industries.

Recently, INER has expanded researches to renewable and new energy territories based on the developed technologies accumulated earlier from conducting nuclear energy researches. Preliminary results have been achieved with respect to solar photovoltaics, wind power, cellulosic alcohol, and fuel cells.
